Neighborhood Histories

Valuable community research is compiled in Walker A. Tompkins’ neighborhood history booklets sponsored by the Santa Barbara Association Of Realtors between 1979 and 1981. The neighborhood histories on this website are written by Scott Williams. It is impossible to assemble these fascinating stories without acknowledging Walker Tompkins as the primary source. I thank Barbara Tompkins for allowing my incorporation of his stories into this material.

Additionally, John Fritsche’s extensive vintage Santa Barbara image collection has given our website life. Thanks to John for his generous permissions.

Long out of print, I make the few remaining original Walker Tompkins neighborhood history booklets available. Because they are spectacularly well-printed, with priceless photographs, these offer detailed community information. Quantities are very limited and available only for the following neighborhoods: Westside, Mission Canyon, Waterfront, Downtown, San Marcos, San Roque, and Samarkand.
