In the mid-1800s, a lighthouse was built on the Mesa, and farming became prominent. The Mesa later faced competition from oil drilling and airport development. After a housing boom post-World War II, the Mesa became a desirable neighborhood with ocean views, a pleasant microclimate, and higher property values. It is now home to approximately 12,000 people across its 1,900 acres.
